Tainted Pet Food Scandal continues to grow. 107 more products from china were banned at the border and found to be tainted. Since our government was not inspecting ingredients as they arrived in this country, it is frighting how much tainted food has entered right under our noses. You really need to read this article from the Washington post... unless you have chosen to stop eating of course.

Slow food in minnesota
This was about how their is a low amount of produce at our local foods. Just because the climate does not stay the same as the do down in the south. Plus local chef care about what they are eating and where it has come from. http://www.slowfoodmn.org/about.html
ecological footprint:overview
i just read an article about ecological footprints and how the world regenerates itself. if we continue to waste our resources, they will soon be gone. for more information click here
Why Eat Local?
I thought this was pretty good because it talked about how far food travels before it hits the dinner table. Basically it said that if you eat local that it will lessen the fuel used to transport the food and will help with the environment. Want to know more, go to the link!

Better Care Produces Better Meat
http://www.certifiedhumane.org/whatis.htmlCertified Humane Raised and Handled animals carry a label that means the animal has been produced with the welfare of the farm animal in mind. Food products that come from these facilities are raised with quality standards. The standards are; they allow animals to engage in their natural behaviors, sufficient space, shelter and gentle handling to limit stress, also the diet doesn't contain antibiotics or hormones. These facilities are continuously inspected, resulting in a higher quality end product.

How to save the planet
Some helpful advice

The prospects for renewables providing
a good part of the answer are excellent.
The nuclear option does not seem to be
a practical answer to the totality of the
world energy problem for this century.
On the other hand, it would be wrong for
the UK to diminish the reliance we place
on nuclear. We should replace the aging
Magnox stations with modern, much
more efficient, and even safer, reactors;
governments worry that this would be a
vote-loser. They just might be wrong. A
recent MORI poll on this issue is rather
revealing (see Table 1).
The engineers – the present generation
and those to come – will work with
passion to save the planet.

Greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect, discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 and first investigated quantitatively by Svante Arrhenius in 1896, is the process in which the emission of infrared radiation by an atmosphere warms a planet's surface. The name comes from an incorrect analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse. The Earth's average surface temperature is about 20-30°C warmer than it would be without the greenhouse effect [1]. In addition to the Earth, Mars and especially Venus have greenhouse effects.
In common usage, "greenhouse effect" may refer either to the natural greenhouse effect due to naturally occurring greenhouse gases, or to the enhanced (anthropogenic) greenhouse effect which results from gases emitted as a result of human activities (see also global warming, scientific opinion on climate change and attribution of recent climate change).

udderly complex: examining organic dairy
I read this article, it was on the rising demand of organic dairy products. People, especially chefs are starting to want more and more organic dairy products for their dining establishments. Few farmers produce organic dairy because there are many strict regulations you need to follow to get a product branded "organic". These products are also very expensive to produce.
I enjoyed this article because i am interested in restaraunts that use organic foods in their menues.

It's not just for getting high anymore... let's not forget about that perks though...
so who knew that this great plant could be used for more than recreation? Well, unless you're one of the ignorant S.O.B's that only see it as a "the downfall of society" and a reason to spend all of our hard earned money on placing non violent drug offenderes behind bars then you've probably already heard of all of the other great uses for this great great plant that is MARIJUANA!

bird flu attacks free-range and organic poultry
although the majority of these outbreaks occur in Asia, it has found its way across Russia, Europe and even some African countries. Bird influenza is of great concern due to its health risks to not only poultry, but also to humans. Questions of whether this is brought about by large scale poultry farms or small scale farms is discussed along with other information of ways to prevent breakouts or control an outbreak are available at

Water...we all need it, we all use it, hell, we're all made of it...but 95% of our fresh water supply is in serious danger of being blasted from existance through overuseage and massive pollution. Underground water, being out of sight, is also out of mind for many of us, yet used by almost everyone. During dry seasons it's the ground water that sustains crops, the ground water that flows through our pipes. Yet now during all seasons it is the ground water leeching pesticides from our fields, the ground water being drained past the point of replenishment. Just thumb through your book, find the recepies and formula that use "water" in any amount, and start calculating what spices to use to drown out that DDT aftertaste.

ENVIRONMENTAL INCIDENTS
This year's Antarctic ozone hole is the smallest one since 1988, but this has little to do with earthly activities and much to do with weird weather in the stratosphere, U.S. government scientists said. The ozone hole has also split into two pieces, a new wrinkle on a phenomenon that scientists first observed in the 1970s, and have tracked as one measure of the impact of pollution. The 2002 edition of the ozone hole covers about 6 million square miles, well below the 9 million square miles seen for the last six years at this time of year. Late September is generally the time scientists see the most ozone loss. "This is smallest ozone hole since 1988, but that's still a lot of ozone loss," said Paul Newman, an ozone researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center outside Washington

Organic Growing
http://www.mda.state.mn.us/food/organic/
When growing organic crops and livestock, there are certain restrictions that you must follow to be able to claim your product as "organic". For instance, if you are wanting to have organic livestock you must feed your livestock only organic feed, you may also not give them any growth hormones, just to name a couple. For organic crops you must use fertilizer that is non-synthetic and approved by the USDA. One way to prevent the use of fertilizer is to use crop rotation.
